There are people all over the world who have considered African safaris at one time or another. This is a great way to experience the sights and sounds of a beautiful land. It is a good idea to know what you should and should not do on your trip, and all of that information is provided here.
DO schedule your safari for a few days after you arrive. Adjusting to the time zone changes can throw off sleep patterns and you want to make sure that you are well-rested when you go on your safari. There is a great deal of activity and adventure involved in African safaris and you will not be able to get the most out of the experience if you are sleepy.
DON’T plan on calling home. If you are out on a safari and you plan on staying at one of the camps, keep in mind that it will not be possible to contact the outside world at your leisure. While there are radios available that can be used to call for help in case of an emergency, cell phones and other mobile devices will not work while you are out there.
DO dress comfortably. You will be out there for hours and you want to make sure that you are at ease the entire time. It is best to wear long sleeve and pants regardless of the weather since there are many bugs out there. If you are concerned about being overdressed, wear items that are made of very thin material.
DON’T pack too much. It is important to take some essentials along with you, but do not take more than is necessary. Bottled water, insect repellant and snacks are great items to have available, but be careful about making your bag too heavy. You should have no worries about leaving too much behind since there are supplies provided at the camps.
DO remember the anti-malaria medication. Unfortunately, malaria is still very prevalent in Africa. To be on the safe side, you should carry some medicine with you. Even though you may have insect repellant with you to ward away the mosquitoes, you need to carry this as well.
DON’T be late. Safaris are filled with people who are eager to get out there and see the sights. If you are late, the entire trip will be thrown off schedule. Of course there are situations where you cannot help being a bit tardy, but it is best to err on the side of caution and leave for your safari as early as possible.
If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on an African safari, it will give you many memories that can last a lifetime. You can ensure a positive experience if you follow all of the advice that you were given here. It may seem like a pain to go through so many changes, but that is the only way things will run smoothly.
